The Quiet Before
— Psalm 46:10

The Quiet Before
Sit. Hands open. Let the eyes close.
Take one long, slow breath. Then another.
Imagine a quiet room. Not empty — quiet. The kind of room where, if you spoke, the words would land softly on the floor.
Into this room, place whatever you are carrying. Do not analyze it. Do not try to fix it. Just let it sit in the room with you.
The Psalmist says: be still, and know. Stillness is not something you achieve. It is something you stop fighting. Stop fighting for thirty seconds. That's the whole practice.
Notice: are you breathing shallow or deep? Soften the belly. Let the breath come all the way down.
Stay a little longer than feels comfortable. The discomfort is the point — it is the noise you are finally meeting.
When you open the eyes, do so slowly. The room is still there. So are you.
A prayer
God of the quiet room, meet me here. Teach me that I do not have to fight for my worth today. Amen.
Scripture
"Be still, and know that I am God."
— Psalm 46:10
For reflection
Stillness is not the absence of noise. It is the presence of something more than noise. Today, see if you can let the noise pass through you, like wind through an open window.
